In short
- You buy Plyfolio once, for £9.99, through the App Store or Google Play. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google.
- You get a personal licence to use the app. Your games are yours.
- Whether you may use a phone at an event is for the arbiter to decide. Ask first.
- Stockfish's evaluations are an engine's estimate, not a ruling or a guarantee.
- Nothing here takes away your rights under UK consumer law.
About these terms
These terms are between you and Remiam Limited (company number 10829191, registered in England and Wales, registered office in Winchester, Hampshire, [registered office address to confirm]). "We" and "us" mean Remiam Limited. There are two parts: the website terms apply when you use plyfolio.com and its free tools; the app licence applies when you buy and use the Plyfolio app. Our privacy notice and cookie policy explain how we handle personal data.
Please read these terms before you use the site or the app. By using them you accept these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use them.
The website: using it
You may use this website for your own information and to use the free tools, at no charge. We try to keep it available and accurate, but we may change, suspend or withdraw any part of it, and we do not promise that it will always be available or free of errors.
The free tools
The PGN viewer, PGN checker, board image, scoresheet maker and notation trainer are provided free and as they are. They run in your browser. You are responsible for what you paste into them and for the files you make with them. Check anything important, such as a scoresheet for an event, before you rely on it.
AI assistants may use the tools on the page as described on the For AI assistants page. Please do not use the tools or the site in a way that overloads it, or scrape it automatically beyond what that page describes.
Guides and news
Guides, news and help pages are general information, dated when written. They are not legal, tax or financial advice, and not an arbiter's or federation's ruling. Rules change; check the current rules for your event.
Our words, designs and marks
The words, designs, illustrations, 3D models, screenshots and logos on this site, and the Plyfolio name and marks, belong to Remiam Limited unless marked otherwise. You may link to any page and quote short passages with credit. Journalists and clubs may use the press kit to write about or promote Plyfolio, as long as the logos and badges are not changed. Anything else needs our written permission.
The App Store badge and Google Play badge are trade marks of Apple Inc. and Google LLC. Chess positions and historic games, such as the Opera Game (Morphy, 1858), are free for all.
Links to other sites
Links to other websites, such as federations, Stockfish or the app stores, are for your information. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for them.
The app: how this licence works with the stores
You get Plyfolio from Apple's App Store or Google Play, and the store's terms apply as well as ours:
- App Store (iPhone, iPad): Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, the "standard EULA" (apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula), applies to your use of Plyfolio. These terms add to it. If they conflict, the standard EULA wins as far as Apple requires.
- Google Play (Android phones, tablets and foldables): the Google Play Terms of Service apply to your purchase, and these terms are the licence for the app.
This licence is between you and Remiam Limited only, not Apple or Google. We, not Apple or Google, are responsible for Plyfolio and its content, for maintenance and support, for any product claims you make (for example that it does not meet legal requirements or consumer protection law), and for dealing with any claim that it infringes someone else's intellectual property. Apple and Google have no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Plyfolio. Apple and its subsidiaries are third party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
The app: buying it
- Price: £9.99, paid once, including any VAT or sales tax the store charges. Prices in other countries are set by the store. No subscription, no account and no in-app purchases. Updates are free.
- Payment is taken by Apple or Google under their terms. We never see your payment details.
- Family sharing works as the store allows.
- One store each: a purchase on the App Store does not cover Android, and a Google Play purchase does not cover iPhone or iPad.
- Refunds are made by the store, under its rules: on the App Store through reportaproblem.apple.com; on Google Play through your Play order history (Google usually refunds within 48 hours of purchase on request). After that, contact us and we will look at it fairly, including where Plyfolio is faulty.
- Cancelling: you normally have 14 days to cancel an online purchase, but for digital content that right ends when the download starts with your agreement, which the store asks for at checkout. Your rights if Plyfolio is faulty are unaffected.
The app: your licence
When you buy Plyfolio, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to download it and use it for your own purposes, on the devices your store account allows (on the App Store, Apple devices you own or control, under the standard EULA's usage rules). The app is licensed to you, not sold. We and our licensors keep all rights in it.
You may not copy, rent, lend, sell, sublicense or redistribute the app, or decompile, reverse engineer or change it, except where the law allows it (for example under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988) or where an open source licence for a part of it gives you that right. Those rights, including your rights under the GNU GPL v3 for Stockfish, always come first.
Your games are yours
Everything you record or write in Plyfolio belongs to you (or to you and the people you played). We claim no rights in it and never receive it. You are responsible for what you add, including other people's names and photos: only add photos of people who are happy for you to, and respect their wishes if they ask you to remove them.
Backups
Your library is stored on your device and, if you choose, in your own iCloud or Google Drive. We do not hold a copy and cannot recover lost data. Turn on backups or export your games regularly if they matter to you.
Updates and devices
We may update Plyfolio to fix faults, improve it or keep it working with new versions of iOS, iPadOS and Android. Some updates may need a recent version of your device's operating system. The store page lists what Plyfolio needs. We will support each version of the app for a reasonable time as the law requires, and tell you in the release notes before we stop supporting older devices.
Acceptable use
When you use the app, the website or the free tools, please do not:
- break any law, or use them to harass, embarrass or harm anyone, including by sharing games, notes or photos that name people who have not agreed;
- use them to cheat, including to get help from an engine, another person or another device during a game;
- try to get into parts of the site or app you are not meant to, interfere with how they work, or introduce viruses or other harmful code;
- copy or reuse the site's content, designs or code beyond what these terms allow.
If you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, we may end your licence. You can stop using Plyfolio at any time by deleting it. Ending the licence never deletes your games from your own device or cloud.
Fair play at the board
Plyfolio is a recording tool. While you record it shows notation only: no board, no engine, no evaluation and no suggested move. It checks that a move you write is possible and completes the written form (x, +, # and which piece) so mistakes cannot go in. It never suggests what to play, and Strict entry turns even that off.
- Plyfolio is not a certified electronic scoresheet and is not approved by FIDE, the English Chess Federation or any league or event.
- FIDE's Laws of Chess, and most event rules, forbid electronic devices in the playing area unless the arbiter has specifically approved them. Whether you may use Plyfolio, and how (for example in flight mode, face up on the table, or with Recording together), is for the event's rules and its arbiter to decide.
- Always ask the arbiter before you play, and follow the answer. Recording together links two phones during play, which many events will not allow.
- We do not promise that any event allows Plyfolio, and we are not responsible for an arbiter's or organiser's decision, including a penalty or forfeit for having or using a phone.
Analysis with Stockfish
Plyfolio includes Stockfish to review games after they are played. Evaluations, best lines and key moments are an engine's estimate at a given depth on your device. They can be wrong, can change with more time, and can differ between devices. Use them for your own study. Do not rely on them for anything else, such as adjudicating a game, settling a dispute or accusing anyone of cheating. We do not promise that any analysis is accurate or complete.
Open source software
Plyfolio is built with open source software, including Stockfish under the GNU General Public License version 3. Each part is used under its own licence, listed with its notices on the Licences page and in the app under Settings, About and licences. Nothing in these terms limits the rights those licences give you, and where these terms conflict with an open source licence for that part, the open source licence applies.
Your rights as a consumer
If you are a consumer in the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says digital content must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality. If Plyfolio is not, you are entitled to a repair or replacement, or if that cannot be done, or is not done in a reasonable time without significant inconvenience to you, to some or all of your money back. If faulty digital content we supplied damages your device or other digital content, and that is because we did not use reasonable care and skill, we will repair the damage or compensate you. Advice about your legal rights is available from Citizens Advice or your local Trading Standards office.
Nothing in these terms affects these legal rights, or the mandatory consumer protections of the country you live in.
Our responsibility to you
- We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if it is obvious it will happen, or if both of us knew it might happen when you bought the app.
- We do not exclude or limit our liability where the law does not allow it, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
- Plyfolio and the website are for personal, private use. We are not responsible for business losses, such as loss of profit, business or opportunity.
- We are not responsible for loss caused by things outside our reasonable control, for losing games you did not back up, for analysis being wrong (see above), or for decisions made by arbiters, organisers or federations.
- The website and free tools are provided free and as they are. As far as the law allows, we give no promise about them beyond using reasonable care and skill.
Other services
Sync and backup use your own iCloud or Google Drive account, under Apple's or Google's terms. We are not responsible for those services, for their availability or for the data you keep there.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when the law changes or we add a feature. The date at the top will change, and important changes will be noted in the app's release notes. Changes will not reduce your rights for a purchase already made. If you do not accept a change, you can stop using the app.
Other legal points
- If a court decides part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours to another business; if we do, your rights will not be reduced.
- Apart from Apple as described above, no one else has any rights under these terms.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts and Scots or Northern Irish law may apply. If you live elsewhere, you keep the mandatory protections of the country you live in and may be able to bring a claim there.
